Volunteer Training Program Marine Pollution Response during Armed Conflicts

This curriculum provides a comprehensive, action-oriented framework designed to prepare volunteers to respond effectively to marine pollution incidents in conflict-affected areas. Armed conflicts often amplify environmental degradation and restrict access for professional responders; therefore, empowering local communities to take informed, safe, and coordinated action is essential for protecting marine ecosystems and coastal livelihoods.
Through eight integrated modules, participants gain both theoretical understanding and practical skills in pollution response, safety management, ecosystem protection, data collection, and community engagement. The curriculum combines classroom learning with simulations, field exercises, and citizen science applications to ensure volunteers are operationally ready under real-world conditions.
By the end of the program, volunteers will be able to:
• Assess and manage environmental and personal safety risks in conflict-related pollution incidents;
• Apply environmentally sound cleanup, monitoring, and reporting techniques;
• Support biodiversity protection and ecosystem recovery efforts;
• Mobilize communities and foster local resilience through environmental education and action.
Target Audiences:
• Local coastal communities and residents in conflict-affected regions
• Environmental NGOs and civil society organizations
• University students and young professionals in marine/environmental sciences
• Volunteer networks and community-based organizations
Approximate Duration:
• Total program: 30–35 hours (delivered over multiple sessions)
• Includes both theoretical instruction and hands-on field training
