Oil Spill Response Training for Volunteers Ecosystem and Biodiversity Protection

This curriculum provides a comprehensive, action-oriented framework designed to prepare volunteers to respond effectively to marine pollution incidents in the Black Sea region. Recognizing that oil spills spread rapidly and cause long-term ecological damage, this program empowers local communities to take informed, safe, and coordinated action to protect fragile marine ecosystems and coastal biodiversity.

Through eight integrated modules, participants gain both theoretical understanding and practical skills in oil spill dynamics, volunteer safety, habitat protection, and wildlife first-response. The curriculum combines classroom learning with field simulations and citizen science applications to ensure volunteers can provide high-quality support to professional response teams while operating under a "No Harm/No Hero" safety principle.

By the end of the program, volunteers will be able to:

• Recognize and report oil spill impacts using standardized observation techniques for shorelines, water columns, and sediments;
• Apply strict health and safety protocols, including the "go/no-go" mindset and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);
• Implement low-impact cleanup and protection techniques that prevent secondary damage to sensitive habitats like wetlands and seagrass beds;
• Support wildlife protection efforts through safe documentation, site securing, and non-invasive monitoring of affected species;
• Foster community resilience by participating in citizen science, public education, and post-incident recovery monitoring.
